With the sun shining and a light breeze in the air, May was the perfect time for a family adventure to St Michael’s Mount. From our lodge in Carbis Bay, my wife and I, along with our two young sons, set off for an unforgettable day at one of Cornwall’s most iconic landmarks.

The Journey & Walking the Causeway
The drive from Carbis Bay to Marazion took around 25 minutes, winding through scenic coastal roads with stunning sea views. We parked in the main Marazion car park, just a short stroll from the causeway - the legendary path that leads to St Michael’s Mount at low tide. The boys were thrilled to walk across the causeway, watching the waves gently lapping at the stones and imagining what it must have been like centuries ago when pilgrims and traders made the same journey.
Exploring the Castle & Gardens
Once on the island, we climbed the winding cobbled paths up to St Michael’s Mount Castle. The boys loved exploring the ancient rooms, peering through arrow slits, and learning about legendary tales of giants and knights. The views from the top were breathtaking, with the coastline stretching as far as the eye could see.
After the castle, we wandered through the subtropical gardens, where the boys excitedly pointed out brightly colored flowers and towering succulents. It was amazing to see how plants thrive in such a unique coastal environment.
Lunch with a View
After all the exploring, we worked up quite an appetite. We stopped at the Island Café, where we enjoyed a simple but delicious meal. The fresh crab sandwiches and Cornish pasties were a highlight for us, while the boys tucked into cheesy toasties and homemade lemonade. Sitting outside with the sea breeze and stunning views of Mount’s Bay made the experience even more special.
Rock Pools & Beach Fun
Before heading back, we took time to explore the rock pools around the island. The boys had a great time spotting tiny crabs, sea anemones, and little fish, carefully dipping their nets into the water. It was a wonderful moment of discovery and adventure.

Heading Home
As the tide started to come in, we made our way back across the causeway, watching as the sea slowly reclaimed the path. It was a magical sight, and we felt lucky to have timed our visit perfectly. We hopped back in the car, and the short drive home gave the boys just enough time to nod off in the backseat after an exciting day.
Final Thoughts
Visiting St Michael’s Mount in May was the perfect family day out. The mix of history, adventure, and natural beauty made it a memorable experience for all of us. If you're staying at Carbis Bay Lodge, we highly recommend making the short trip - just be sure to check the tide times before you go!
We can’t wait to return and explore even more of this magical Cornish landmark.
